Developed by Natural Language Processing Group at Microsoft Research in Redmond, ESL (English as a Second Language) Assistant is a free web-based prototype proofing tool that can help non-native speakers to identify any shortcomings or errors in their English writing and suggest improvements or corrections accordingly. To use this free service from Microsoft, users can go to the ESL Assistant web site and type or paste their English phrases in the text box. The”English Teacher”will then check for possible errors in their written and provide them with a wavy green underline (scribbles). If users point the mouse on a portion of text with a wavy green underline ESL Assistant will show you some suggestions. If users move their mouse to select a proposal that would ESL Assistant can now search the World Wide Web to find real examples, so that users can compare the proposal with what they wrote and decide on the proposal to match what they are trying to say. ESL Assistant will check for potential errors such as misspellings, preposition confusion confusable adjectives, word order, noun number, verb morphology, using personnel selection, gerund and infinitive.
ESL Assistant from Microsoft Research also offers Microsoft Outlook users an Outlook add-on to be installed in their Outlook (Version 2007 onwards). This outlook plug-in will allow users to send the contents of email, they are writing directly to the ESL Assistant. The text will then immediately checked for errors
